It’s party time – R U ready for FURT?
We’ll tell you right up front that FURT is a wacky party game.
Of course, that shouldn’t be any surprise if you’re familiar with Wiggity Bang Games.
Wiggity Bang games are not deep thinking, strategic board games. Instead, Wiggity Bang games are meant to bring out the party in everyone. They’re the original publishers of Quelf and Quelf Jr. which were a big hit and subsequently acquired by a larger game company.
And with FURT, they’re at it again.
Just a quick look at the winning conditions in this party game and you’ll get an idea what you’re in for. To win you have to make it to the volcano and throw yourself (your playing piece) in and withstand all the other players trying to make you laugh.
By the time you come to the end of the game, that win condition can be pretty tough. I can’t recall how long it took us to get a winner in our first game because no one could keep a straight face.
But I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s start at the beginning.
How to play FURT
FURT is an easy party game to play. After setting out the board, putting all the word strips in the volcano at the center of the board, and each player selecting their crazy playing piece, players simply take turns rolling the dice and seeing what happens.
Once you roll the dice, pick the top card from the draw deck and do what the card says depending on the color you rolled:
- The Volcano Has Spoken – Black
Since it’s the volcano speaking, you simply do whatever the card tells you to do (we all know volcanoes will never lead you astray). You may move ahead or you may even move backwards. Either way, it’s the crazy word of wisdom on the card that brings in the fun. (Check out these pictures to see some samples.) - Straight-Faced – Red
Just like it says, you must keep a straight face while the timer runs and all the other players yell whatever crazy words they want to throw at you. Survive the onslaught an you’ll get to move ahead. - Guess What? – Green
It’s time to act out, draw something, and talk and hope the other players can guess what in the world you’re doing, drawing, or describing. But you don’t get to just draw what you want. You’ll have to pull a word slip from the volcano to see what it is the volcano wants. - Truth or Fiction? – Purple
Read the card, and finish the statement in your own words. Then all the other players have to guess whether you are telling the truth or not. The more people you trick, the more you move forward. - You Are… – Yellow
You must become whoever or whatever the card says you are for 30 seconds. Sure it sounds simple. But once again you have to pull a word from the volcano and integrate it into your act. -
What The?! – Blue
Now you’re on a secret mission. No one can know what you’re trying to do. Some even have you trying to get others to do something as well. Of course, they’ll know you’re trying to get something done, so you’ve got to be creative – and of course, sneaky. These tasks are usually a lot of fun.
Here are some samples, to give you an idea of what’s on the word strips in the volcano: Glue stick, tambourine, nail gun, unibrow, falafel, muffin top, chalkboard, caramel apple, garden gnome, hot air balloon, and so much more.
But wait, there’s more. If you land on a Hot Spot you have to follow another rule that was selected from random cards at the beginning of the game. Of course they’re also crazy, so just beware.
With all that going on, you can see why as players start getting to the volcano to end the game it’s hard to keep a straight face for the win.
Can the whole family enjoy FURT?
As we’ve said and as you can see, FURT is just a lot of wackiness. And we know that not everyone in your family likes to be silly or do strange things. But don’t worry too much because everyone else is doing wacky things as well. Just let yourself go and have fun.
The age recommendation is 13+ but don’t feel restricted to that. The cards are full of text to read and young kids won’t be familiar with many things on the cards or word strips. So we’d say 8+ and you’ll be okay.
You may also find that kids are a lot more willing to do crazy things anyway. So if you’ve got teenagers, FURT could be a great game to pull out for their parties. Then stand back and let the video recorder roll. Maybe you’ll get some good leverage points for the future…
Wacky playing pieces as well
Wiggity Bang couldn’t make a wacky party game without throwing in wacky playing pieces. After all, the playing pieces in a board game or party game will definitely help set the tone for the game. When you choose a candy corn or mustache for your playing piece, you know you’re in for something crazy.
How does FURT score on the “Let’s Play Again” game meter?
Even though we laugh a lot when we play FURT, it doesn’t score high on our “Let’s play again” game meter. That’s mostly because the length of the game isn’t one to play multiple times in a row. Instead, the game just leaves you with funny memories of silliness rather than cheers to play again right after one game ends. But it’s going to stay on the party game shelf because when we’re ready for a wacky party game, we know right where it is.
Thanks Wiggity Bang Games for some crazy, funny times.
We weren’t given any hot spot cards for our game
